Here’s a little bit of writing: me throwing my ideas down into this blog…
You may remember me doing a piece on what makes me as a designer. Things have changed since then…
Sure, I still do a lot of work on the computer. Still too much. But over the next two terms, that is going to change, I am sure. Regular readers of my site will have noticed a few posts under the Upgrade to Film section. This is going to be my final major project, a showcase of the best in film photography. Not digital, film.
I’m not happy with my digital work as a designer. It’s too boring, too plain and simple. Not enough can go wrong. Like my lecturer says, it lacks serendipity. And every time I try something away from the computer, it seems to work much better than I had expected. I will be updating a current project leaving out the digital vectored type and screenprinting it onto a digital print instead. Two of the three briefs we have worked on this term have sparked ideas involving physical, touchable objects. My interpretation of our information graphics piece is a large-scale theatrical exhibition piece with UV lighting and electronics and goodness knows what else.
I’m really enjoying my work at the moment and I love the majority of the stuff I am making. I just wish I made this transition earlier in what has been my very short graphic design career…
Funny how I only started to learn about Kodachrome when I found out it was not being produced any more. This makes it rare and expensive

But I’ve got 15 on order and will be shooting them over the course of next year. Should be an interesting project…

Interesting effect from very out of focus lights shot through rained on glass. Taken with my new Canon Powershot G10.

And these are just some of the images from one of his collections of photographs. Check out his site for some really inspirational photography…
A call to arms for all those who love film photography. Upgrade to Film is a personal project exploring and celebrating the medium of analogue photography. The project will consist of a number of events, get-togethers, competitions, books, posters, that sort of thing. If you are interested, watch this space, search for Upgrade to Film on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/upgradetofilm
About as much bloat as Vista had…

I’ve been looking into European Quotations as part of a project this semester when I stumbled upon this slightly bizarre but beautiful take on eight Belarusian proverbs:
Quite interesting to read what they translate as…
Just a quick plug for our friend Chico who has recently set up his design company design 302. Some nice stuff on there already. I wish him the best of luck with his future work.
Well, it’s getting near the time of year when uni starts back up again. It’s hard to believe that we’re now entering our third year at Newport. Ah well, no time to sit around and just think about that, there’s stuff to be getting on with.
I’m keeping myself busy with websites and personal projects. Just updated innov8 so you can have a sneaky peak at all the stuff I’m doing at the moment…
Certainly a contender…
Right, concerted effort to try and keep the internets updated with what I do with my life, so here goes, lol.
Got back to Liverpool today for my Easter holidays. No doubt it won’t be long before I’m missing university again, but I’ve got enough work to be able to take my mind off that
.
The Lomo’s shutter didn’t work, disassembled it and now it’s in bits in my uni room. Fun times… Bought myself an Olympus XA2, which is, judging by the pictures on the right from Flickr, just the same sort of style of photography but for a hell of a lot less money.
Projects nearing their completion. You already saw the Graduate Show poster for the university in the previous post. Since then, we have been briefed for two branding projects and production of an artists book for the documentary photographers. I’m doing two books, but they’re going along nicely and I should be able to show you some stuff some time soon…
Been quite a while since an update here. Had a lot on, least of all the Graduate Show Poster. It’s now complete and handed in – we’re just waiting on the results now to see whose design will be printed across the university. Exciting times! Anyway, here is a small version of the finished product:
Anyway, we’re currently working on a new brief which I’ll be talking about in future articles to come. For now, I’m back into photography. It’s my birthday this coming Monday, so I decided to buy one of these:
For those of you who don’t know much about cameras, this is a Lomo LC-A. It’s a bit of a cult camera and it has sparked up a vast community of “Lomographers” who take photographs in quite a different way to the old school of documentary-style photography. The Lomography website is here. It promotes the use of hip-shooting, a style of photography where you don’t actually look through the viewfinder – you just guess at the distance and shoot. It’s a lot of fun (if a little overhyped and overpriced). Anyway, I managed to get one of these little babies, in great nick, for £67 off eBay. I’ve ordered 20 rolls of outdated Fuji film and can’t wait to get shooting everything and anything of interest.
Coming up next, a feature of a very talented Lomographer on Flickr…
Due to the timescale we have to work on this, I’ve stuck to the one idea and this is what I have so far (warning, big image):
Lemme know what you think…
After our lecture this morning, I got a strong idea for the Graduate Show Poster. Our lecturers want us to develop one strong image to form the basis of our poster submission. I was first on the register and showed my ideas, but they were too clichéd. So I thought up something completely different. It fits the bill with the measurement theme we’ve been given all year. The whole idea is one of technical drawings and blueprints, similar to the VW Camper Van T Shirt I bought from Next:
Anyway, here are some useful images I have collected for inspiration:
I’m going to be picking up a few anatomical books from the library to start sketching some stuff. Can’t wait to get started on this one…
